Project Profile: Integrated E-Waste and Plastic Processing Plant

E-waste and plastic debris represent two of the fastest-growing municipal waste streams globally. Establishing an integrated E-Waste & Plastic Processing Plant provides an economically viable answer to resource depletion and environmental degradation.

Project Profile: Integrated E-Waste and Plastic Processing Plant

This project profile outlines a dual-line industrial facility designed to process scrap electronics alongside post-consumer and post-industrial plastics. By leveraging mechanical shredding, optical sorting, and extrusion technology, the plant recovers high-purity precious metals, ferrous/non-ferrous fractions, and engineering plastic granules for industrial supply chains.

Market Potential & Industry Drivers

The global e-waste management market continues to expand due to rapid device obsolescence and tighter Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations. Concurrently, corporate commitments to increase Recycled Content Targets (RCT) have created sustained demand for high-grade recycled plastic resins (rPET, rHDPE, rPP, rABS).

  • E-Waste Supply: High generation of discarded printed circuit boards (PCBs), consumer electronics, IT infrastructure, and home appliances.

  • Plastic Supply: Mixed rigid plastics, electronic casings (ABS/HIPS), packaging films, and municipal plastic waste streams.

  • Primary Off-Takers: Smelting/refining facilities (for PCB powders and precious metals), metal fabricators, automotive component manufacturers, and plastic packaging converters.

Plant Capacity & Output Specifications

The proposed medium-scale integrated facility is planned with an annual operational capacity of 10,000 Metric Tons (MT). Operating on a 300-day annual schedule with two 8-hour shifts per day, the processing breakdown is structured as follows:

Input FeedstockCapacity ShareKey Output ProductsRecovery Yield
Electronic Waste (WEEE)40% (4,000 MT/year)High-grade PCB dust/fractions, Copper, Aluminum, Steel scrap, CRT/Lead glass~88–92%
Waste Plastics (Mixed)60% (6,000 MT/year)rHDPE, rPP, rPET, and rABS/HIPS regrind and pellets~80–85%

Technical Process & Manufacturing Steps

1. E-Waste Processing Line

  1. Depollution & Manual Disassembly: Hazardous items (batteries, capacitors, mercury switches) are manually isolated. Higher-value modules like CPUs, RAM, and clean circuit boards are pre-sorted.

  2. Size Reduction: Dual-shaft shredders reduce remaining bulk assemblies to uniform sizes, followed by heavy-duty hammer mills.

  3. Multi-Stage Physical Separation:

    • Overband Magnetic Separators: Extract iron and ferrous metals.

    • Eddy Current Separators: Isolate non-ferrous metals such as aluminum and copper.

    • Air Classifiers & Density Tables: Separate lighter plastic fluff from heavier metal concentrates.

  4. Fine Milling: Remaining circuit board fractions undergo pulverization to yield concentrated metallic powder ready for smelting off-takers.

2. Plastic Processing & Granulation Line

  1. Optical & Manual Sorting: Automated NIR (Near-Infrared) sensors sort polymers by chemical composition (PET, HDPE, PP, ABS) and color.

  2. Wet Granulation & Shredding: Rotary granulators reduce polymers into consistent flakes while water flushes surface contaminants.

  3. Friction Washing & Sink-Float Separation: High-speed friction washers clean labels and adhesives. Sink-float tanks separate polyolefins (PP/PE) from denser polymers (PET/PVC/ABS).

  4. Thermal Drying & Degassing Extrusion: Clean flakes are dried, conveyed to twin-screw extruders with vacuum degassing, and melt-filtered to produce uniform recycled plastic granules (pellets).

Machinery & Equipment Requirements

The estimated major equipment configuration for this facility includes:

  • Primary Dual-Shaft Heavy Duty Shredder (150–200 kW)

  • Granulators & Fine Hammer Mills with integrated dust extraction

  • Eddy Current & Overband Magnetic Separators

  • Air Classification & Zig-Zag Density Separators

  • Continuous Friction Washing & Sink-Float Separation Tanks

  • Twin-Screw Plastic Extruder & Strand Pelletizing Line

  • Pulse-Jet Baghouse Dust Collection & Air Scrubbing Systems
